Dear Fishermen and Friends,
While we are sitting in a stretch of perfect weather now, this week we were encumbered by Wind, wind and more wind which has mixed up our fishery. While it took us a few days to dial in the bait and the fish, these changes in weather patterns have been really good as it jump started new fisheries and gave us some diversity.
Bonito have finally showed up in good numbers. It is not read hot, but it will continue to build and get better. We have had several reports of Bones caught on the west end as well as at Great Point. At Great Point, if you are fishing from the beach, use a deadly dick or a smaller metal. You can catch them all day, but I have had my better luck at first light. On a boat, these speedsters will be cruising the edge eating sand eels. I prefer low profile swimming plugs in this environment. On the west end, the Bonito will be sitting outside the opening on the Bonito Bar.
The common theme of these reports in the last few weeks has been, show me some turbulent, oxygen rich water and I will show you some bass. Well, if you’ve spent some time around Great Point or on the east side of the Island in the last few days, there is a pretty good chance that you’ve caught a few bass or seen them swimming in the wash. Most anglers have avoided the south shore for obvious reasons. The surf can be extremely dangerous and it’s not worth catching a few fish to fish in these conditions. Over the last few days though, the Bass have pushed back into the waters and have been very active in lower light situations.
In my opinion, Great Point has been our best fishery in the last week. It consistently produces Bluefish at most times during the day. I’ve enjoyed fishing the east side of the point in the last few days. The bluefish seem to be on the edge of a long cast, so use a little extra weight if your rod can handle it. I love the Hopkins for this purpose. It is an all-around perfect plug and can catch any species. In lower light situations, drop your rod tip and bring it back just under the surface at three quarters speed to target Striped Bass and when the sun is higher, keep that rod tip high and retrieve it as quickly as possible for Bluefish. They have closed the point past the galls, so be aware, but there are plenty of fish before then or you can walk the beach to the north.
Bluefish continue to be here in good numbers. You can regularly catch them on the east and south side of the Island. There are also several fish at Great Point. With all the wind this week, we explored north of Nantucket into the sound and found some very big schools 4-6 miles off the beach.
