Hyannis, MA – The 52nd Figawi Race Weekend is scheduled from May 26-29, and this year’s contestants will return to Nantucket Island for the race for the first time since Covid-19 lockdowns began. In another first, and a sign of the times, the vessel Mojo of Hyannis Yacht Club will be sailing with a cannabis company sponsor.
Suncrafted, a Middleborough based cannabis producer and dispensary, focuses on sustainable and medicinal grade cannabis products, and this year is highlighting its “Get Outdoors” program. The phrase is designed to appeal to consumers who prioritize sustainability by purchasing sun vs. indoor grown cannabis, as well as appealing more generally outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy an outdoor lifestyle.
The company sponsored the Mojo boat in last season’s beer can race and Hurricane Cup series, and Mojo’s crew went on to place first in its class in most of the races it competed in during 2022. The team hopes to match its record beginning with this year’s race. Garry Blank, of Sandwich, the captain of Mojo was audibly excited when asked of the 2023 racing season. “Despite many setbacks we were able to capitalize on a great season, and were even happier to have Suncrafted on board helping us celebrate these victories.”
Suncrafted will continue the Figawi celebration into the weekend, with a pop-up scheduled from 1-3pm on Sunday at ACK Natural located at 19 Spearhead Dr, located just by the Nantucket Memorial Airport, about a 10 minute ride from downtown. There, the team will be sharing information about Suncrafted’s products and selling Figawi edition and other “Get Outdoors” swag. Due to the federal prohibition on cannabis, ACK Natural cannot sell any cannabis produced by Suncrafted’s facility, as that would require crossing federal waters. The two companies nevertheless agreed to collaborate this weekend to raise awareness for summer travelers.
“We want to remove the stigma how cannabis consumers are viewed,” noted Doug Leighton, CEO of ACK Natural. “Many think cannabis consumers smoke and eat Doritos on the couch. That is just not true anymore. The new cannabis consumer is active and consumes cannabis to relieve pain and heighten their experience. Some even use it before they work out to enhance their endurance.” Hence the two new operators are joining forces to get the word out about the active cannabis consumer lifestyle.
